Deciding to move back is the easy part. The hard part is that a hundred small tasks all feel urgent at once. Here’s the order that actually works.
1. Fix your timeline
Everything else keys off your move date. Pick a target month, even if it’s loose. Leases, school admission cycles, notice periods, and shipping quotes all depend on it.
2. Sort the money before the movers
Currency, account closures, and pending 401(k)/IRA decisions take longer than you think and can’t be rushed from a different time zone. Start these early.
3. Understand your tax exposure on both sides
You may owe a partial-year filing in the US and become a resident for tax in India in the same year. Knowing the cutoffs before you move can save real money.
4. Book shipping last, not first
Get quotes early, but book once your date is firm. Sea freight is cheapest and slowest; plan for 6–10 weeks door to door.
5. Keep a “landing week” checklist
The first week back — SIM card, bank KYC, address proof, gas connection — is its own project. Write it down now so you’re not improvising jet-lagged.
More detailed guides on each of these are coming. This is just the map.
